Life story

Emily Matilda Covey was born in 1875 in Billingshurst, Sussex, she was baptised on 29th August. Her father, William Covey, 27yrs, was an Agricultural Labourer, her mother was Eliza, 24yrs, nee Strudwick, and she had 2 older siblings, Albert 10yrs, and Agnes 9yrs, they lived at 2, Newbridge Wharf, Wisborough Green. In 1891 Emily's sister, Agnes, 19yrs, was employed as a servant in Heene Villas, Heene Road, Worthing and Emily also took employment near to her sister at West View, Heene Road, Worthing as a housemaid/domestic. She became a victim of the Worthing town typhoid outbreak of 1893. Emily Matilda Covey died on 6th August 1893, aged 18yrs at West View, Heene Road. Her death certificate gave the cause of death as "Enteric Fever, Hyperpyrexia"
