Life story

Mary Ann Allcard was born on 5th July 1825 in Stratford, Essex, she was the daughter of John Allcard, 45yrs, Broker, and Mary Ann nee Swinborn. Mary Ann jnr. had an older sister, Sarah, born 1817. The family lived in Stratford Green, West Ham, they were well off, employing 4 domestic servants and the sisters remained at home. In 1849 their mother died, and Mary Ann and Sarah continued to live with their father, who moved to Bakewell, Derbyshire, after retirement.

On 25th March 1854 Mary Ann married Benjamin Hornbuckle Hine, 39yrs, at Bakewell, Derbyshire, her husband was a merchant engaged in the manufacture of lace and hosiery, owning a factory in Nottingham, the centre of the lace trade at that time. They moved to Nottingham where they had 4 children, Walter b.1856, John Edward b.1858, Mary b.1859, and Violet b.1861. In addition to their own children, Mary Ann and Benjamin took an 11 yr. old orphan, Emma Woodhead, into their family, describing her as destitute in the census of 1861. She later became a ladies maid and was still with the family in 1881, aged 30yrs.

Benjamin, Mary Ann and the family were living in Derbyshire in 1881. On 22nd February 1884, aged 59yrs, Mary Ann died in Worthing, Sussex, she was buried in Heene cemetery.
