Life story

Life story

Alexina was born in Edinburgh, the daughter of Alexander Gordon Smith and Jane (Jean) nee Dickson. All the children were given the middle name of Gordon after their father. On 27th October 1885, Alexina married Ralph Edgar Wheeler at St Giles. Edinburgh. Ralph was a schoolmaster serving in the Corps of Army Schoolmasters. He was based in Edinburgh with the 2nd Royal Scots regiment. In November 1885, he was transferred to 8th Hussars and sent to India. Alexina went with him and whilst there, gave birth to two sons. Ernest Percival Gordon Wheeler was born on 6th January 1889 and baptised in Meerut, Bengal. Sadly he died on 7th August. Cuthbert Gordon Wheeler was born on 3rd January 1890 and baptised in Rangoon, Burma. He died at the end of 1891 in Alderbury, Wiltshire, after the family had returned home. Until March 1892, the family lived in Aldershot and it was here that Ralph Gordon Wheeler was born. From January 1893 until January 1897, the family lived at the Garrison School in Edinburgh. They then spent five years living in Malta. In 1903, Ralph was transferred to the Garrison School at Shornecliffe Camp, Cheriton, Kent. He retired in January 1913 and the family moved to Worthing, living at "Brierlea" Kingsland Road, Broadwater. They later moved to 39 Rowlands Road, Worthing. Ralph died on 20th March 1921 and was buried at Heene. Their son, Ralph Gordon died after an operation on 13th July 1934. He was buried at Durrington Cemetery. By 1939, Alexina was living at 4 Eriswell Road, Worthing. She died here on 9th January 1945. Probate was granted on 31st January to Florence Wheeler, widow. Effects £123 19s 1d.
