Life story

Alfred Vernon was born on 12th December 1854 in Clerkenwell, London; he was the son of John Vernon, 37yrs, wholesale florist, and Louise, 25yrs, nee Messenger. Alfred had 3 siblings, Florence, born 1851, John, born 1853, and Arthur, born 1858. In 1861 at the age of 6yrs, Alfred was at boarding school in Horsham, Sussex, with his older brother, John, 8yrs.

On 18th December 1880 Alfred, 26yrs, married Fanny Louisa Webb, 19yrs, at St. Mary, Islington, their son, Harcourt, was born in 1882, and a daughter, Dorothy, in 1887. Alfred followed his father's trade in floristry supplies, and became a manufacturer of artificial flowers, employing 3 men and 50 women in 1881. By 1891 Alfred had changed trades and was a manager of a boot warehouse, later becoming an agent for a boot manufacturer.

Alfred lived in various London areas, including Old Street, Hornsey and Shepperton, before moving to Worthing, Sussex, after retirement, where he and Fanny lived at 78, Marine Parade. Alfred died, aged 77yrs, on 27th May 1932, probate was granted to Fanny Louisa Vernon, widow, and Harcourt Vernon, bank official. Effects £1313 10s 2d. Value 2022 - £97,600.
