Life story

Life story

Alice Jones nee Watkins was born in Herefordshire near Ross on Wye to John Watkins and his wife Mary Cotten. She had three sisters, Emma, Louisa and Charlotte. She married William Jones, an agricultural labourer when she was in her 20's. Their son, Edward Theophilus was born in 1839 and tragically died in 1844 in Monmouth. By 1871 she was widowed and lived with her sister, Charlotte, in London and worked as a housekeeper. Alice died in 1882 while living at 8 Heene Villas, Worthing and was listed as a retired housekeeper She was buried in Heene Cemetery on 30th December, 1882 in a service conducted by the Rev Beccles.

In her probate document Clara Von Raalte was mentioned as an executor - this was her niece - daughter of her sister Louisa.
