CHURCH WARDEN AT HEENE
Death of Mr Anderton Sharp Roberts
Ill for only a couple of weeks, Mr Anderton Sharp Roberts, an old and respected resident, passed away on Friday at Woodlands, West Tarring, in his 84th year. After a long career of government service, Mr Roberts retired in 1902, and for a time he lived at Purley before coming to Worthing in 1904. Here he became a church warden of Heene an office he filled for nearly fourteen years, being very constant in his attendance at service. Always fond of outdoor life, Mr Roberts in his earlier years had been a keen angler and interested in cricket, and at his residence at Tarring he found scope for his love of gardening. Here by the way he played bowls among friends up to the end of last July. Since then with his wife he spent a long and enjoyable holiday at Harrogate, and on his return last month, appeared to be in excellent health. Mr Roberts was one of the original members of Worthing Golf Club.
The funeral took place at Heene Cemetery yesterday afternoon, preceded by a service in the church, and was conducted by the Rector of Heene Rev. J P Fallowes assisted by rev. L S Blenkins; and among those present were the Rector of Tarring Rev C Lee, Rev. J Puttick, Rev A Simmonds and members of the Church Council.
