Life story

Life story

Anderton was born in Bradford, Yorkshire the son of Joshua and Elizabeth. He was baptised at Christ Church, Bradford on 22nd May 1840. His father was a tea dealer. Sarah Anderton, Elizabeth's mother had an interesting job in the production of worsted cloth. She was a worsted stuff presser. Her job was to place cloth between two sheets of stiff press paper and pass it through a hot pressing machine. This gave a finish to the cloth. As a young man, Anderton was employed as a telegraph clerk in Liverpool but by 1864, he had moved to London. On 13th April, he married Jane Green at St Mary's Church, Islington. The couple set up home in Hackney where Anderton worked for the Post Office. By 1891, Anderton's job had taken him back to Yorkshire where he was Postmaster in Normanton. Jane died in 1898 aged 56. On 12th June 1900, Anderton married Alice Scovell at St Mary Abbotts Church in Kensington. The family moved to Great Grimsby where Anderton took up his last appointment before retiring. In 1902 Anderton retired to Purley and then finally settled in Worthing in 1904. For a while the family lived in Mill Road before moving to West Tarring. Anderton died on 12th October 1923. Probate was granted on 6th November to Alice Roberts widow and Lilian Jane Roberts spinster. Effects £10406 2s 11d.

Alice Roberts nee Scovell was born in Kensington on 8th July 1869, the daughter of Thomas and Sarah. After Anderton died in October 1923, Alice moved to Willingdon near Eastbourne to be near her step-daughter Lilian. She lived at "Mountroyd", Wish Hill. Alice died at the Esperance Nursing Home, Eastbourne on 21st March 1945. She left an estate of £18473 (approx £656740 in 2021).

CHURCH WARDEN AT HEENE

Death of Mr Anderton Sharp Roberts

Ill for only a couple of weeks, Mr Anderton Sharp Roberts, an old and respected resident, passed away on Friday at Woodlands, West Tarring, in his 84th year. After a long career of government service, Mr Roberts retired in 1902, and for a time he lived at Purley before coming to Worthing in 1904. Here he became a church warden of Heene an office he filled for nearly fourteen years, being very constant in his attendance at service. Always fond of outdoor life, Mr Roberts in his earlier years had been a keen angler and interested in cricket, and at his residence at Tarring he found scope for his love of gardening. Here by the way he played bowls among friends up to the end of last July. Since then with his wife he spent a long and enjoyable holiday at Harrogate, and on his return last month, appeared to be in excellent health. Mr Roberts was one of the original members of Worthing Golf Club.

The funeral took place at Heene Cemetery yesterday afternoon, preceded by a service in the church, and was conducted by the Rector of Heene Rev. J P Fallowes assisted by rev. L S Blenkins; and among those present were the Rector of Tarring Rev C Lee, Rev. J Puttick, Rev A Simmonds and members of the Church Council.
