Life story

Anne Torin was born in Englefield Green, Egham, Surrey, in 1841 (Dec. q.)

Her parents were, Richard Torin of Sanquhar House, Forres, Scotland, born in Bombay, India, and her mother, Emilia Isabella Frances Fraser-Tytler, who was born in Italy. They married in St. Helier, Jersey, C.I., in January 1841. Anne had 2 younger brothers, Ernest Richard H. Torin, b. 1848, and Lionel Maynard Torin, b. 1851. 

On 16th April 1863, Ann, aged 21yrs, married Arthur Upton Fox Ruxton, 30yrs, Captain, H.M.'s Bengal Staff Corps, at the Diplomatic Mission, Turin, Italy. They returned to India where he was a serving Officer, and five years later, Anne was widowed when Arthur was killed in a battle with the frontier tribes in Punjab in March 1868. Anne had a son, Richard F., 3yrs old, and a daughter, Ethel Mary, 2yrs old, and was expecting her third child, a daughter, who was born shortly after Arthur's death and was named Arthurina, after him. Anne returned to England, a 27yr old widow with 3 small children, and in 1871 she was living in central London. Ten years later, Anne and her three teenage children were living in Jersey, C.I., she settled there until after 1911 when she moved to Worthing with her two unmarried daughters, living at Bonar, Wykeham Road, where she died, aged 89yrs, in 1930. Probate was granted to Ethel Mary Ruxton, spinster, effects £5292 13s 11d. Value 2021 - £354K.

Ruxton, Commandant 3rd Punjab Infantry killed in action whilst gallantly leading his regiment against the Bazoties in the Ublan pass on the 11th March 1868 aged 35 years 9 months. This tablet is erected by his brother officers in the Punjab Frontier Force as a token of their regard and esteem."
