Life story

Life story

Annie Alice Daniels was born in 1870 in Cinderford, Gloucestershire, to her gardener father, Shadrach Daniels, aged 23, and her mother, Mary Ryder, aged 25.

In 1891 she was a housemaid in Sloane Gardens House in London - also known as the Ladies Dwelling Company. This was a block of flats specifically set up to house women who wished to remain unmarried and pursue professional careers. This was part of the Bloomsbury Project founded by Agnes Garrett, the sister of Dr Elizabeth Garrett Anderson.

Annie married police constable, Alfred Thomas Merydue on 9 November 1892 in Bognor, Sussex. They began married life in Cokeham, Sompting, Sussex and had one child, Charles Alfred Merydue, born in 1893. He was baptised in Sompting church on 8th October. Soon after, the family moved to Heyshott, Sussex but by 1909 were living in Ifield near Crawley.

At the outbreak of World War I, the family were living at The Police Station, Bartelot Road, Horsham. At the end of the War, they moved to Worthing, living in Belle Vue Terrace, Elm Grove. Annie worked as a laundress, employed by Mrs Margaret Maddock of Durrington Steam Laundry. Her husband worked as a labourer for Oliver Holden at Elm Grove Nursery. He died in 1930 and was buried at Heene.

Annie died on 16th March 1936 at her son's home 5 Lavender Grove, Mitcham, Surrey. Probate was granted on 28th April to Charles Alfred Merydue, fireman. Effects £443 2s 7d.
