Life story

Life story

Benjamin Kent was born in Brighton (Brighthelmstone) in 1799, the son of Thomas and Elizabeth nee Wood. His father was a carpenter. Benjamin's siblings were Thomas, Elizabeth, Alice, John and Emily. His mother Elizabeth died in 1804 and his father in 1816. Benjamin married Catherine Crunden at St John's Church, Piddinghoe, Sussex on 31st December 1821. Benjamin's occupation was as a tin plate worker or tinsmith. He and Catherine settled in Bread Street, Brighton and had four children. Catherine died in 1858. After lodging in Kemp Street, Benjamin moved in with his daughter Emily and her husband Edward Wicks. By 1881 and now in his 80s, Benjamin moved in with his widowed daughter Alice in London Road, Brighton. Shortly after 1881, the family moved to Worthing where Alice ran a lodging house at 18 Milton Street. Benjamin died here c10th April and was buried at Heene on 13th April. No probate.
