Caroline Letitia Bomford was born in Dunnington, Warwickshire, registered in the June quarter 1853. She was the daughter of Heming James Bomford, 41yrs, Farmer, and Letitia, 35yrs, nee Bomford, her parents were both born in the village of Atch Lench, Worcestershire, and were probably cousins; she was 1 of 6 children.
Caroline lived at the farm with her family until 1888 when her mother died, she was the unmarried daughter and became housekeeper to her elderly father until his death in 1895. He had been a tenant farmer of hundreds of acres, employing 30+ workers at one time, yet he left estate of only £10 (£1400 -2022 value), and Caroline then had to support herself.
In 1901 she had moved south to Worthing, Sussex, where she began a laundry business in partnership with 3 sisters, Annie, Edith and Ethel Holloway, at home in Elm Grove, in a property she called Dunnington, after her birthplace. In 1911 Caroline and Annie were still in a business partnership at Elm Grove and were employers.
At some point, Caroline moved to Brenchley, Boundary Road, Worthing, where she died, aged 74yrs, on 22nd March 1928. Probate was granted to Annie Eliza Holloway, spinster, effects, £2274 19s 8d. Value 2022 - £152K.
