Life story

Catherine was born in Ardingly on 17 August 1877. Her parents were Thomas Comber (spelt Coomber in the 1871 Census ) a baker, born in Ardingly, and Mary Ann Comber born in West Chiltington.

By 1881 Mary Ann was a widow and kept the Royal Oak pub in Ardingly. Fourteen-year-old Catherine was living there with her mother and a sister, sixteen-year-old Elizabeth Alice,

In 1891 but by 1901 Mary Ann and Catherine were at Broomfield, Harrow Road, Worthing. However, Catherine died at Wales Farm, West Chiltington, on 4 March 1903, aged 26, leaving £905 12s 5d to her mother.

Catherine's death certificate gave the place of death as Stony Barn, West Chiltington and cause of death as suicide by drowning herself in a well while temporarily insane. The inquest was held on 5 March and the certificate was received from Frederick W Butler, coroner for Sussex.
