Life story

Life story

Catherine was born in Hackney, Middx, the daughter of William and Mary nee Prater. William was a cordwainer (shoemaker) and died in March 1821, two months before Catherine's birth. She was baptised at Well Street Independent Chapel, Hackney on 14th August 1821. Mary Field ran a laundry and her daughters Mary Ann and Catherine helped out. Catherine lived with her mother until Mary's death in 1875. By 1881, Catherine was working as a housekeeper in Hornsey later moving to Walthamstow where she lived with the Dabbs family who were relatives. Her brother Samuel who worked as a stockbroker had married and moved his family to Worthing by 1891 and by 1901, Catherine was living with them. Samuel died in 1903 and was buried at Heene. By 1911, Catherine was 89 and living with the Banks family in Milton Street, Worthing. She died at the home of a Mrs Tidey, 27 Thorn Road, Worthing on 28th January 1914. No probate.
