Life story

Charles Randall Francis was born in Brighton, Sussex, on 29th March 1847, to Thomas Francis, 31yrs, and Emma, 29yrs, nee Curling. Charles was baptised on 1st August in the Weslyan Methodist Church. He was one of eight children, William 1845, Ellen 1848, Deborah 1850, Robert 1851, George 1854, Annie 1855 and Frederick 1857. His father was a Grocer by trade, running a large and successful business in Western Road, Brighton, employing 12 assistants. His mother died in 1858 when Charles was 11yrs old. Charles married Janetta Stuchfield, 21yrs, on 14th July 1879 at St. Peter's Church, Brighton, she was the daughter of George Stuchfield, a London grocer. In 1881 they ran a grocery business in Brighton, Charles describing himself as a Cheesemonger. Their daughter, Emma, was born in 1880, a son, Horace Arthur, in 1888, and two more daughters, Eva, 1891, and Hilda 1893. Charles expanded his grocery business becoming a Wine and Spirit Merchant at 78, Western Road, Brighton, and by 1901 he had moved his family to 'Ivanhoe' St. Botolph's Road, Worthing. Tragedy struck the family in 1911 when Charles died on 13th January, aged 63yrs, followed by the death of his wife, Janetta, 52yrs, 7 days later, on 20th January.
