Life story

Life story

Charlotte was the younger of two Irish sisters who came to England just before World War II. She was born in Newbridge, Co Kildare, Ireland, the daughter of Robert and Charlotte and the sister of Rebecca. Her father was a sergeant in the Royal Irish Constabulary. Charlotte's mother died in 1897. There are no Irish census records before 1901 as they were destroyed in a fire. Sometime before this date, the family moved to Dublin. Robert Kennedy died in 1902. Charlotte's brother William married in 1901 and he and his wife Phoebe moved to England where he worked as a commercial traveller. Charlotte visited them and is recorded at their home in 1911. There was no Irish census in 1921 due to the Uprising, so it is not known where Charlotte was living. She may have returned to Ireland as there is no trace of her in the English census. Charlotte and her sister Rebecca were living in England by the time of the 1939 Register, staying at 19 Belsize Road, Worthing. Rebecca died in 1942 and was buried at Heene. Charlotte moved to 30 Madeira Avenue, Worthing where she died on 29th April 1956. Probate was granted on 9th June to Barclays Bank Ltd. Effects £9434 4s 9d.
