Life story

Life story

Clara was born in Birmingham, the daughter of William and Elizabeth. She was baptised at St Editha's Church, Tamworth on 17th April 1874. Her father was a jeweller working in Birmingham. Clara was sent to school in Tamworth along with her sister Alice. Their sister Martha was a pupil teacher at the school. Four of the sisters, Clara, Alice, Eliza and Louisa were close and eventually moved to Worthing. Clara seems to have suffered from ill health most of her life. By 1891, she was living in a doctor's house in Shropshire and may have been sent abroad in the early 1900's. By 1911, Clara was a patient in a nursing home in Shelley Road Worthing. After leaving there, she lived at 26 Winchester Road with the nurse who ran the nursing home. Clara died at Groombridge Nursing Home, Chaucer Road on 18th December 1925. Probate was granted on 21st April 1926 to Eliza Elizabeth Russell spinster. Effects £12936 16s 7d. Her sister Louisa was buried beside her when she died in 1933. The two other sisters Eliza and Alice were buried at Durrington Cemetery, Worthing.
