Life story

Life story

Edith was born in Stoke Newington, the daughter of Benjamin Richard Taylor White and his wife Frances Sarah Ann (Fanny). Benjamin was a draper in Halesowen, Worcestershire. In 1895, Edith married Percy White, a commercial traveller (no relation) in Halesowen, Worcs at the end of December. The last banns were called on 15 Dec. The couple moved to 37 Adelaide Road, Brockley, Kent. Sadly, Percy died on 22 Oct 1900 leaving an estate of £275 18s 1d (approx. £22K in 2020). Edith was named as his executor. On 19th November 1904, Edith married Arthur Lambton, a journalist and author at the Register Office in Marylebone. He was the divorced husband of Gladys Lambton nee Johnson. Their marriage had been annulled in 1903 (see papers on Ancestry.co.uk). Edith had a connection to Sussex as her father was by now farming at Wiston. Arthur and Edith moved to Worthing, living at Windermere in Rowlands Road. By 1906, Edith was suffering from kidney disease which was becoming chronic. Arthur felt that a warmer climate might help her condition. The following year, Arthur and Edith sailed to Naples for the winter. In Sep 1909, the couple went to South Africa, not returning until the following May. By 1911, Arthur and Edith were living at Tremayne in Grand Avenue. Edith died on 5 Oct 1912 suffering from chronic nephritis and anasarca (kidney disease and renal failure). No probate. Arthur married again in 1918. He died in 1935 after falling down the steps at Lords Cricket Ground.
