Life story

Life story

Edith was born in Sheerness on the Isle of Sheppey, daughter of David Rees Evans and his wife Sarah Elizabeth. David was an estate agent. In 1901, Edith visited her brother James who ran a printer and stationer's shop in Haywards Heath. In the jewellers next door was a young man aged 17, Albert Smart training to be a watchmaker. The couple married eight years later in Sheerness. Their daughter Ruth Edith was born in 1910. Edith and Albert moved to Worthing, where Albert opened a watchmakers and clock repairers shop on the corner of Harrow Road and Tarring Road.
