Life story

Life story

Ella was born in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, the daughter of Gration Charles Barry Hart and his wife Mary Anne. She was baptised at Chesterfield on 28th September 1864. Ella was educated at a private school in Wanstead. She worked as a nurse before becoming a deaconess at Mildmay Park in Islington. The Mildmay Institution was founded by Rev. William Pennefather and his wife Catherine. In 1864, the reverend built a large conference hall, a deaconess home, an invalid home, orphanage and hospital. It was to be staffed by Christian women not occupied in the home. The idea was to bring charity and mission work to the slums in the city. It was here at Mildmay that Ella became friends with Elizabeth Agar who was the Lady Superintendent. By 1924, they were both living at "The Rest" in Heene Road, a Mildmay home. Elizabeth died in 1926 and was buried at Heene. Ella continued to live at "The Rest" with a housekeeper. She died on 14th October 1942 at Groombridge Nursing Home in Chaucer Road. Probate was granted on 18th January 1943 to Westminster Bank Ltd. Effects £12695 17s 2d. Ella was buried beside her friend Elizabeth.
