On 14th May 1864 when Emily was 10yrs old, her father, now 34yrs of age, was admitted to the County Lunatic Asylum, St. Francis, in Haywards Heath suffering from "melancholia" * where he remained for the rest of his life, dying there, aged 58yrs, on 15th January 1889. In 1871 Emily, 17yrs, and her mother, Harriett, 44yrs, were both in domestic service, Emily was a housemaid with the Wassell family in Gloucester Place, Brighton, remaining there until September 1874 when, aged 20yrs, she too was admitted to St. Francis, County Lunatic Asylum, Haywards Heath suffering from "sub- acute mania*. She recovered from this episode and was discharged after seven months on 30th April 1875. Emily Charman died from Tuberculosis on 10th October 1878 at 3, Clarendon Place, Worthing, aged 24yrs, she was a domestic servant. Her death certificate gave the cause of death as "Phthisis".
