Mary married John's son William in Portsea in 1881 and died two years later in 1883. In 1885, Ernest attended the National School in Titchfield. He left in July 1889. His stepfather William Vince died in 1891 leaving Ernest living with his widow Elizabeth from his second marriage. Ernest moved to Worthing before 1901 and worked as a carter in one of the local market gardens. In 1903 he married his landlady's daughter Annie. Mabel Annie was born in 1904 and Ethel May was born the following year. The family lived in a cottage in Elm Grove. Ernest died in Worthing Hospital on 24 Sep.
