Life story

Florence Alice Gurney was born on 2nd May 1848 in St. Helier, Jersey, C. I. She was the daughter of John Frederick Gurney, gentleman, 27yrs, and Frances Sarah, 22yrs, nee Berry, she had 2 siblings, Emma, born 1846, and Frederick, born 1851.

The family moved from Jersey to Guernsey and in 1861 were living in Plymouth, Devon. During this period, her mother reported her father to the authorities for his ill-treatment and her parents' marriage ended.

In 1868, Florence married Henry James Jonas, 29yrs, an admiralty clerk in HM Dockyard, they lived in Plymouth, where they had a daughter, Mabel Frances, in 1871. Florence was a schoolteacher in 1891, and lived with her mother in Bedfordshire, her husband doesn't appear with her in any census after 1871.

In 1908, Florence's daughter, Mabel, 37yrs, married Charles Henry Thomson, 59yrs, a superintendent with the RSPCA, and in 1911 Florence, now widowed, was residing with her son-in-law in Bexhill, Sussex.

Florence died on 3rd January 1939, aged 91yrs, her address was 10, Clifford Road, Bexhill, she died at 5, Amherst Road, Bexhill. Probate was granted to her daughter, Mabel Frances Thomson, widow, effects, £1850 3s 10d. Value 2022 - £129K.
