Life story

Life story

Frederick was born in Stepney, the son of Andrew and Elizabeth. He was baptised at Swanscombe Street Congregational Church, Newham on 21st February 1860. His father was a dock clerk working for a tobacco broker. He had originally been a cooper and was granted the Freedom of the City of London in 1842. The family had moved to West Ham by 1861 and as a young man, Frederick followed his father into the tobacco business.

1879 Frederick was granted Freedom of the City of London by patrimony in the Company of Coopers on 1st Oct. His father Andrew was originally a cooper and granted Freedom in 1842. 1892 Frederick was admitted to Hope and Unity Lodge of the Freemasons in Brentwood on 28 Apr.

In 1882, Frederick married Emma Amelia Zabell in West Ham. The couple had three children, Millicent, Alice and Frederick. For a while the family lived in Rainford, Essex before moving to Wanstead. By 1901, Frederick had retired and the family moved shortly after to Worthing, living in Lansdowne Road. (Their home was the very large house on the north-west corner of Lansdowne and Downview Roads). Frederick died on 22nd February 1913. Probate was granted on 11th April to Emma Amelia Chalmers widow and Aldelbert Winfred Zabell bank clerk. Effects £58970 18s 2d. Re-sworn £58567 11s 4d.
