Life story

Life story

George was born in Derby, the son of Rev. John Garton Howard and his wife Charlotte Christiana. He was baptised by his father at St Michael's Church, Derby on 26th March 1828. George went to school in Derby and Sedbergh. By 1847, he was an undergraduate at St John's College, Cambridge and gained a BA in 1853. In this year, George was ordained as a deacon in London and the following year, ordained as a priest. Between 1853 and 1856, he was curate of St Barnabas, Kensington. George was sent to India in 1856 to work as an assistant chaplain to various diocese in India and Burma. During this period, George was a co-founder of the Anglican and Eastern Orthodox Churches Union and published several books on religion. On 3rd February 1858, George married Emilie Cecilia Martha Johnson at Moulmein in Burma. She was the daughter of Major William Nicholas Gibson Johnson who served in India until his death in 1861. Several of her sisters are also buried at Heene. By 1866, George, Emilie and their children had returned to England as George had been appointed Curate of Baltonsborough in Somerset. They were living in Kent from 1868 where George was chaplain of St Mary's Home, Stone. The family were continually moving with George's appointments. From 1872 until 1875, he was chaplain of St Peter's Home in Kilburn and from 1877 until 1880, he was curate of St James's Church, Tunbridge Wells. In 1882, George founded The Clergy Friendly Society and later The Clergy Pensions Institution. From 1888 until 1890, George was curate of Beckenham.  By 1911, George had retired and the family were living in Hertford. They moved to Worthing shortly after that, living at 18 Queen's Road. George died here on 29th January 1913. Probate was granted on 4th April to Charles Stephen Garton Howard retired banker. Effects £2478 12s 4d.
