Life story

Life story

Gertrude was born in Croydon, Surrey, the daughter of Frederick Knighton Pulford and his wife Katherine Rebekah. Her father was a military tailor and outfitter with a business at 65 St James's Street, Westminster. Gertrude never married and lived with her family all her life. The family were wealthy and by 1891 had moved to the Addiscombe area of Croydon. Gertrude was educated at a private school in Wanstead. Her mother died in January 1903 and Gertrude and her sisters Kate, Ada and Alice took over the running of the home. Frederick died in October 1911 leaving an estate of over £50K which was divided equally between his eight surviving children. He also left sums to his daughter's companion Emma Cotton who had been with the family for many years and to his gardener. Gertrude's sister Kate died in 1915 and Gertrude and Ada moved to Twickenham, Middlesex. By 1933, the sisters had moved to Worthing, living at 35 Boundary Road. Their nephew Frederick Gordon Pulford had a dental practice in Down View Road and a house in Richmond Road. He was the son of their brother Frank. Gertrude died on 5th July 1936. No probate.
