Life story

Life story

Henry was the son of David Smith, a general labourer, and his wife, Sarah Ann, nee Boulter. He was 7 years old when he died in 1893 of membranous croup having suffered for 35 hours.

Croup is a respiratory infection usually caused by a virus leading to swelling inside the trachea (the windpipe) which interferes with normal breathing.  Characteristic of the condition is a 'barking' cough. Other children of David and Sarah had died by 1911.

The census of that year is confusing as David, by then a widower, stated that he had had 4 children, 4 were still living but 6 had died. In fact, there had been at least 6 children, William Thomas born in 1879 and lived to manhood, Edith Amy 1882 . 1893, Henry Robert 1886-1893, Olive Mary born 1887 and was still living in 1901, Sarah Ann 1885-1886 and  George Henry  born in 1880 and died at 3 months.
