Life story

Life story

We know very little about Jane's early life. According to her marriage certificate and later census records, she was born in Marylebone, Middlesex, the daughter of John Keating a master tailor. We have been unable to find anyone of that name and occupation in that area or a record of Jane's birth in Middlesex. We do know that by 1881, Jane was working as a cook in Brighton. She married William John Martin in Eastbourne on 13th July 1886 at St Saviour's Church. William was the son of William Spencer Martin and both were described as "gentlemen". Jane's address was given as Grange Gardens, Eastbourne. Jane carried on working after her marriage and by 1891 she was back in Brighton. She was widowed by 1901. Jane died on 25th November 1905 at "Dinedor" in Belsize Road, Worthing. This was the home of the Nicholls family and she may have been working for them.

Probate was granted on 29th December 1905 to Charles Keating, a marine steward in the Merchant Service. Effects £540 3s 2d.

Charles' father was William Keating, a boiler maker. Charles was born in Brighton in 1871 and lived in Lancing, Sussex. We are unable to find a connection to Jane.
