Life story

Life story

Jessie was born in Peckham, Surrey, the daughter of Edwin and Mary Ann. She was baptised at St Giles Church, Camberwell on 1 October 1865. Her father was a whitesmith working with tin and zinc. 

Jessie worked as a school teacher until she married Charles Frederick Bonsall at St Giles, Camberwell on 13th May 1888. At the time she lived at 2 Bushey Villas, Camberwell. Charles was a timber merchant. 

In 1891, Jessie gave birth to a son Charles Edwin. Her daughter Alice Mary was born in 1896. The family continued to live in Camberwell until 1909 when they moved to Worthing, living at "Eton House" 6 Downview Terrace, Tarring Road. Jessie died on 22 May 1909 of Pulmonary Tuberculosis and Asthenia. No probate. 

Charles married again in 1912 to Elizabeth Kent. The couple lived at various addresses in the Broadwater area. In 1938, they left London on 20th August bound for Freemantle, Australia but Charles died suddenly in Aden on 11th September. He was buried at sea and is remembered on Jessie's tombstone.
