Life story

John Parson Burleigh was born in Toppesfield, Essex, to John, 36yrs, Innkeeper and Farmer, and Rebecca Eliza, nee Parsson , 21yrs, he was baptised on 22nd October 1843 at St. Margaret of Antioch. He had 4 siblings, Mary Charlotte, 1845, Catherine Rebecca, 1847, Richard Boyden, 1850, and Hannah Elizabeth, 1854. In 1861, John was 17yrs old and apprenticed to a Victualler in the High Street, Strood, Kent. He married Clarissa Ann Ackland on 29th September 1869 when he was 25yrs old; she was the daughter of a Mariner and born in Bristol in 1827. They married at St. Stephen's, Hammersmith, her age was given as 35yrs, but she was actually 42yrs, 16yrs older than her husband. In 1871 he was an Ironmonger, aged 28yrs, employing 2 men and a boy, living with Clarissa at 25, Queen's Terrace, St. John's Wood. They continued to live at this address for the next 20yrs and between 1891 and 1901 John retired from his Ironmongery business and they moved to a property named Broadclyst, in Manor Road, Worthing, where they stayed for the next 20yrs. Their marriage was childless. John was widowed in 1920. John Parson Burleigh died on the 11thJune, 1921, aged 77yrs. He left estate of £4389 5s 9d. Value 2019 - £216K.
