Life story

Life story

John William Rope, junior, was born on 5th December 1825 in Bloomsbury, London. He was the son of John William Rope, 27yrs, Confectioner, and Elizabeth, nee Jones, and had 3 siblings, Emma b.1830, Thomas b.1832, and Louisa b.1834.

The family lived over the confectionery shop in St. George's Terrace, Hanover Square, and as the eldest son, John inherited the business on the death of his father in 1845.

John married Mary Yeomans, 20yrs, on 3rd September 1849, at Old Church, St. Pancras, and over the following 15 years they had 6 children, 5 sons and 1 daughter.

In January 1858 John was initiated as a Mason into the Lodge of Peace and Harmony.

John was the caterer at the society wedding of the year at Crowhurst Park in July 1861. He was described as confectioner to the Queen, so his business had been successful enough to have acquired a Royal Warrant.

Between 1871- 1881 John and his family were living at Hyde Park Place, Cumberland Gate, where John was widowed in 1880. In 1885 he was living in Paddington. Sadly, four of John's six children predeceased him. On census night 1901, he was staying at the Grand Hotel, Hastings, and in 1902 he was living in Bayswater.

In 1911 John was living with his widowed daughter-in-law, Blanche Mary Rope, in Browning Road, Worthing, Sussex. John died on 9th November 1918, aged 92yrs, in Worthing. No probate.
