Life story

Life story

Julia Harriet Bate was born in 1838 in Madras, India, she was the daughter of Lieutenant William Bate, 57th Regiment, later Captain. Julia, 19yrs, married Thomas Spence Hawks, 29yrs, on 26th August 1857 in Rangoon, West Bengal, India. Over the next 20yrs, Thomas and Harriet had 11 children, 1 son died in infancy.

Thomas and Julia returned to England c1880 and lived in Beckenham, Kent, in 1891 they lived in Cheltenham, Gloucester, and in 1901 they were in Guildford, Surrey; at some point Thomas and Julia moved to Worthing, Sussex, where they lived at Holcombe House, Heene Road. Thomas died on 2nd December 1905, aged 76yrs.

Julia was living at St. Vincent's, Rowlands Road, Worthing, at the time of her death, on 24th March 1917, aged 79yrs. Probate was granted to Edward Percy Smythe, solicitor, effects, £469 4s 1d. Value 2021 - £ 34K.
