Life story

Life story

Laura was born in Ceylon, now Sri Lanka, to an unconfirmed family, possibly named Briggs. In 1894, aged 18yrs, she married Samuel Oxton-Jones, 27yrs, a widower with 2 daughters. He was born in Chester, Lancashire in 1867 and was a successful Plumbago (Graphite) merchant trading and living in the Far East. She gave birth to a daughter, Kathleen Phyllis Laura Oxton-Jones in 1896. Sometime before the outbreak of war in 1914, with the fear of a Japanese invasion, Laura and Kathleen were evacuated from Sri Lanka and came to Worthing to live with an Aunt, Samuel remained in Ceylon. Laura Oxton-Jones died on the 8th October 1915 at Seabrook Queen's Road, Worthing in 1915, aged 39yrs. Her address was Bostonia, Warwick Gardens. Her death certificate gave the cause of death as Cerebral Haemorrhage.
