Life story

Life story

Mary was one of several daughters of Major General Nicholas Fenwick Johnson and his wife Bridget Mary, who spent their final days in Worthing. She was born in Quilon, Madras, India and baptised there on 12th November 1834. Her father died in 1861 and the family returned to England, except for Mary who stayed on in Moulmein. She returned to England after her mother died in 1866 and took over as head of the family. Five of the sisters lived in Bexley Heath for a while before moving to St Leonards in Sussex. By 1901, three of the sisters were living in Church Crookham in Hampshire before finally settling in Worthing. Mary died here on 5th March 1909. Probate was granted on 27th April to Henrietta Eliza Johnson and Alice Johnson spinsters. Effects £167 10s 4d.
