Life story

Life story

Mary Selina Walker was one of 14 children of Thomas Walker, a Captain in the Scots Greys and his wife Constantia Frances Anne nee Beresford. Mary was baptised at Thorp Arch near Wetherby, Yorkshire on 14th August 1824. Some records state that she was born in Bern, Switzerland. Mary's mother Constantia was continually pregnant and ran a vast household of servants (as many as 17 in the 1841 census). She outlived her husband by almost 30 years. Mary married Duncan Macgregor, the son of a general in the Army at St Mark's church, Marylebone on 30th June 1867. Little can be found about Mary's life after her marriage. Duncan Macgregor is listed on the 1891 census living at The Croft, Heene Road, Worthing but Mary is not listed. He died in 1896 and is buried at Heene. Mary is on the electoral rolls from 1904, living at The Croft in Heene Road, Worthing. She died on 25th May 1916. Probate was granted on 20th June to Helen Clogstoun widow. Effects £11786 8s 5d.

The contents of The Croft, Heene Road, Worthing were sold by auction in July 1916 raising approx. £1800 (£126292).
