Life story

Life story

Mathew was the son of a surgeon, William Moss, and his wife, Mary Anna nee Boyd. He was born on 9 March 1831 at Eton in Buckinghamshire. Nothing more could be found about him until his marriage to Mary Elizabeth Winnett, a grocer's daughter, at Milton Next Gravesend, Kent, in September 1873. By 1881 they had 2 sons, Ernest William and Lionel Boyd, and a daughter, Mary. They were living at Cissbury View, Heene, and Mathew was a retired coffee planter. They had moved to Bath in Somerset by the time of the 1891 Census. His sons were educated at Tonbridge School and both went on to have Army careers. Ernest joined the 3rd Batt. Worcestershire Reg. and served in the South African War 1900-2. He was awarded a DSO for his part in the defence of Ladysmith. He had reached the rank of Major by 1915 and was killed in action at Gallipoli on 10 August that year. Lionel ,CMG, DSO, Legion dHonneur, joined the 2nd batt. South Staffordshire Reg. and also served in the South African War and in WW1, being mentioned in Despatches 6 times. He retired to Tanganyika where he became a member of the Legislative Council. Mathew died on 26 December 1900 at Belsize, Worthing, aged 69.

The Last Will and Testament for Mathew Henry Moss was dated 24th January 1895.

Matthew's daughter, Mary Helen Moss, married Worthing Infirmary physician, Dr Frank Hinds on 26th April 1889 at St. Botolph's Church, Heene.
