Life story

Life story

Maud was born in Dalston, Hackney, the daughter of William Smale Tucker and his wife Helena Louisa. She was baptised at All Saints, Haggerston, Hackney on 5 Nov. Maud's father was a bank clerk. In 1901, Maud married George Sunley Porteus at All Saints, St Johns Wood on 22 Oct. George was a widower from Rochdale and a valet. Their daughter Phyllis Mary was born in Hove in 1904. The marriage does not seem to have lasted. George moved back to Lancashire and Maud and her daughter moved in with her mother who lived in Worthing. In the 1911 Census, Maud described herself as a widow although George was still alive and didn't die until 1941. By 1924, the family were living at 122 Heene Road. In 1930, Maud's mother Helena died and was buried at Heene. Maud died at Swandean Hospital about 7 Nov 1931. No Probate.
