Life story

Percival Carwithen Greenwood was born on 18th December 1874 in Penge, Surrey, he was baptised on 2nd February 1875 at Holy Trinity, Penge. He was the son of William Henry Greenwood, 26yrs, an Indian and American Merchant, and Annie Arthurina, 23yrs, nee Carwithen; he had 4 siblings, Margaret b.1877, Arthur b.1879, Alfred b.1884, and Francis b.1888.

In 1891, aged 16yrs, Percival was boarding at Charterhouse School, Surrey, after completing his education he became a stockbroker's clerk and lived in boarding accommodation in Wood Green, (1901) and alone in Deptford (1911).

Percival married Emma Louisa Haviland, a widow with a 16yr old son, Cyril, in Hackney, London, in October 1914.

At the outbreak of war in 1914, Percival enlisted with the Royal Navy as an ordinary seaman, he was promoted twice, to able seaman and then leading seaman. He was awarded the 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.

After the war, in 1921, Percival and Emma were living in Billericay, Essex, and at some point, they moved to Worthing, Sussex, where they lived at 106, Grand Avenue. They had no children.           Percival died on 13th February 1931, aged 56yrs. Probate was granted to his widow, Emma Louisa Greenwood, effects £2622 1s 10d. Value 2022 - £190,300.
