Life story

Life story

Not much is known about Sarah's early life only that her Father worked as a farmer and lived in Bermondsey, London with his family. By 1861 aged just 14 Sarah had left home and was a house servant to Jonathan Pannell and his family, living at 72 West Street, Fareham, Hampshire. Jonathan Pannell was working as a baker.

Sarah married Thomas Grace on 19th March 1865 at St. Matthews Church, Buxton, Surrey.  Thomas worked as a Carman (an occupation that involves driving horse-drawn vehicles for transporting goods).  By 1871 they had moved to Long Lane, Bermondsey, London. Thomas still worked as a Carman.

They had 4 children-

Alice Grace born 1866 Bermondsey, died 1954 Wandsworth, London

Maria Jane born 19th October 1870 Bermondsey, died 1945 Battersea, Surrey

Jane Grace born 1871 Bermondsey

Violet L Grace born 1882 Newington died 1974 Hendon London

In 1881 they are living in Newington, Lambeth, London, they also have Sarah's sister, Louisa Bishop staying with them. In 1891 they were living in Penton Place Newington, London. Thomas was now working as a furniture Driver/Groom. In 1901 they were living in Thrush Street, Newington. Thomas died in 1908 in Walworth, London and Sarah continued to live in Thrush Street, she still had her Daughters Maria Jane and Alice living with her.

She moved to Worthing sometime after 1911 to live with her Daughter Violet and Violet's family who were living at Newlands' Manor Road. Sarah died on 1st March 1919 at The Lodge, Nursing Home, Stoke Abbott Road, Worthing of Nephritis (inflammation of the kidneys), and anaemia.

There doesn't appear to be a probate record for Sarah.
