Life story

Thomas William Prickett was born on 30th November 1822 in Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire, his parents were, Marmaduke Thomas Prickett, 48yrs, Landowner, and Anastasia, 33yrs, daughter of Reverend John Armistead, of Cranage Hall, Cheshire. Thomas had 5 siblings, Catherine b.1813, Anastasia b.1815, Josiah b.1817, George b.1820, and Frances b.1826. In 1835, his mother died, aged 45yrs, Thomas was 13 years old. He was educated at Kingston College, Hull, then Trinity College, Cambridge, achieving his BA in 1840, and MA in 1848, the year he was ordained priest. Thomas was Curate of Holy Trinity, York, 1847-1849 when failing eyesight forced him to retire, aged 27yrs.

On February 4th, 1863, Thomas, 40yrs, married Ann, 33yrs, daughter of Humphrey Sandwith, MD, Hull, at Sculcoates, Yorkshire, where both families lived in Albion St.  Ann's father was later associated with Great Ormond Street Hospital. Thomas and Ann moved to Cheltenham, Gloucester, they had 2 sons, Marmaduke Alan, 1864, and Francis Fenton, 1869.

Marmaduke Alan also became a Church of England priest and in 1890-1891 was curate at Holy Trinity Church, Worthing.

Thomas remained a Church of England clergyman but was also a landowner of considerable wealth. By 1891, now retired, Thomas and Ann had returned to Yorkshire and in 1901 were living in Worthing, Sussex, at Natland, Tennyson Road, where Thomas died, aged 79yrs, on 26th September 1902.              Probate was granted to his widow, effects £29010 3s 4d. Value 2021 - £3.6m.
