Species description

The Twin-spot Centurion is the UK's largest soldier fly, with a wing length of perhaps 10mm and a body length up to 14mm. Females are more stocky than the males. It gets its name from the two white spots on the frons just above the antennae (and for it being the country's largest soldier fly).

These insects have a flight period from July to November and are found in open and wooded habitats. They lay eggs on fresh dung or adjacent soil.

This large fly has a widespread distribution in the UK.

Species family information

Soldier flies contain just under 2,700 species worldwide. They are a diverse group that share a preference for wetland habitats - or at least damp places in soil, under bark or in decaying matter. They are often noted for periods of inactivity.

This family has the name 'soldier flies' either for the colour striping of the larvae that can resemble uniforms or because many of them (but not all) have thoracic spines resembling armour. They are not known to assemble in formation or be aggressive!

Insects evolved in the Ordovician from a crustacean ancestral lineage as terrestrial invertebrates with six legs (the Hexapoda). This was the time when terrestrial plants first appeared. In the Devonian some insects developed wings and flight, the first animals to do so. An early flying group was the Odonata from the Carboniferous, the damselflies and dragonflies, which have densely-veined wings and long, ten-segmented bodies. They are day-flying carnivores, with an aquatic larval stage, so are commonly seen flying near water. The carnivorous larvae are called nymphs. Odonata species are short-lived, damselflies surviving for 2-4 weeks, dragonflies for up to 2 months.

Some insect groups in the Cretaceous co-evolved with the flowering plants, and they have had a close association ever since. These groups are the Hymenoptera (bees, wasps, and ants), the Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths), the Diptera (flies), and the Coleoptera (beetles). The diversity of beetles is astonishing. Of all the known animal species on the planet, one in five is a beetle!
