All 1960 burials in Heene Cemetery have now been identified, some presented more of a puzzle than others. For instance, it was difficult to locate Anna Bowen's family as we knew so little about her from the burial register.
We knew Anna Bowen was buried in Heene Cemetery on 23rd September 1920 aged 87, from details in the burial register. There was no inscription on her grave but her probate record was helpful.
Her probate record listed her date of death as 19th September 1920 and her usual address as: Ashton House, 30 Rowlands Road, Worthing and stated that she was a spinster. It also cited William Felton: Chemist, as one of her executors.
The 1881 England Census contains searchable occupations. Using the 'Ancestry.co.uk' application, and searching for the 1881 census for surname: Felton, first
name: William and keyword: chemist, the search engine returned only one suggestion.
This was William Felton, apprentice chemist and druggist to Frank Gregory at 71 Bank Street Maidstone, Kent. William was born in 1865 in St. John's Wood, Middlesex. He was the son of Thomas Felton and Mary Anne. Thomas and Mary Anne's marriage banns revealed that Mary Anne's father was William Artaud. Was William Felton related to Anna Bowen via his mother Mary Anne Artaud?
A search of marriages between a Bowen and an Artaud prior to Anna's birth in 1833 revealed the marriage of John Bowen and Anna Catherine Artaud in 1828. Anna Catherine was William Artaud's brother. Anna's executor, William Felton, was Anna Catherine's great nephew and Anna Bowen's first cousin once removed. This allowed us to identify Anna's parents and grandparents.
