Life story

Amelia was born in Islington to parents Thomas George of Bramber Sussex and Amelia Juliet Bankes of Brighton, Sussex. Amelia was the 4th of 8 children born to Thomas and Amelia and was baptised on 13 October in Islington. Amelia's Father Thomas was a Surgeon and was one of twelve children. His father was a Gentleman Farmer from Maudlin House, owning 800 Acres and employed 28 men and 8 boys. The family also lived in Ventnor- villas, Cliftonville in Hove. Thomas went to London to study medicine and passed his exams in 1870 In May 1869 Amelia's parents Thomas George Lidbetter and Amelia Juliet Bankes Marry at St Giles, Camberwell, Southwark Their first child Leonard Bankes Lidbetter was born and died in 1870 in Islington. Three daughters and three sons all born in Islington - Maude Isabel 1872, Ellen Sophia 1873, and then Amelia Juliet 1874. Percy Montagu Bankes 1878, Arthur Easte 1880 and Walter Reginald birth and death in 1881. The family lived at 257 Essex Road in Islington. In 1882 the family have moved to Worthing and were living at 5 Queens Street where their last child daughter Edith Dorothy was born. Thomas is working as a general Practitioner/Surgeon. In 1883 in May, Father Thomas George dies at 5 Queens Street in Worthing and sister Edith Dorothy also dies the same year. Amelia Education was in Brighton and she went to a Higher-grade board school in Brighton and in 1888 passes her exams aged 15. Amelia becomes a Governess like her elder sister, and lives in Worthing with her mother, Grandmother on her mothers' side and siblings. Since the death of her Father his Brother Richard Francis has been living with the family in Worthing. At 16 Amelia is a school governess and at the age of 34 is still living at Queens street with her mother and has never married. Her Sister Ellen is also a school Governess Amelia's brother Percy joins the Merchant Navy when he is 14 and passes his exams to become a Second mate of a foreign-going ship. Percy dies in 1916 in Basra and is remembered on Amelia's grave inscription. Amelia dies on 31 May 1920 in Worthing Brother Arthur Easte joins the Navy aged 13 and settled in Australia. He died in 1946 aged 67 and never marries. Sister Ellen dies in Worthing 1954 and Sister Maude dies in Worthing 1965 aged 93
