Life story

Life story

Sybilla was born in Hampstead, the daughter of James Thomas Hammack and his wife Eliza Sybilla. James changed his surname to Hammick by deed poll in 1866. He was a barrister and Secretary of the Registrar General's Dept. at Somerset House. In 1875, James filed for divorce on the grounds of his wife's adultery with a local farmer whilst they were living in Sutton in Surrey. A final decree was granted in December 1876. James was granted custody of the children. On 4th September 1886, Sybella married John Percy Shotter at St Mary's Church, Harrow. John was an insurance broker working for private ship owners and came from Godalming. By 1901, John had retired and the couple were living in St Botolph's Road, Worthing. In 1911, they visited John's father in Hampshire and took with them Dorothy Cecilia Watts whom they had adopted. She was the daughter of Laura Hammick and Sybilla's niece. Laura and her husband had divorced in 1900.  Dorothy went to Australia and in 1919, married George Alexander Allan in Queensland. In 1921, Dorothy and Sybilla  travelled from New York to Plymouth on the SS Zeeland, arriving back in England on 9th June. Dorothy died in Dar es Salaam on 7th April 1927. She is buried in Upanga Road Cemetery and remembered on Sybil's tombstone at Heene. John Shotter died on 29th September 1935 at "Hong Kong" in Wallace Avenue, Worthing. He is buried in Eashing Cemetery, Godalming. Sybeila moved to "The Lawns Hotel" Heene Terrace. She died on 9th April 1937 at "The Kensington" Sea Road, Boscombe. Probate was granted on 30th July to Barclays Bank Ltd. Effects £4987 19s 10d.
