Life story

Amelia Juliet Bankes was born in Brighton, Sussex, she was baptised at the Chapel Royal, Brighton, on 27th November 1850. Her parents were, Richard Frederick Bankes, 28yrs, Mariner, and Amelia Juliet, 29yrs, nee Barnes, she was their only child. After leaving the merchant navy, her father became an innkeeper in Brighton. In 1869, aged 19yrs, Amelia married Thomas George Lidbetter, 22yrs, a medical student, in Camberwell. They lived in London, Thomas qualified as a Surgeon/GP, and over the following 13 years, they had 8 children, 3 died in infancy. Amelia's father, Richard, died when he was only 46yrs of age and her widowed mother then lived with Amelia and her family until her death in 1898. In 1883, Amelia Juliet Lidbetter was also widowed when her husband, Thomas, died, aged just 35yrs. By 1891 she was living in Worthing, at 5, Queen's Road, with 3 of her children, her mother and brother-in-law. Amelia remained in Worthing for the rest of her life, she died, aged 86yrs, on 26th November 1936. Administration was granted to her daughter, Maude Isabel Lidbetter, spinster, effects £359 1s 1d. Value 2021 - £26K.
