Life story

Arthur Kaye Bowstead was born on 21st July 1857 in Messingham, Lincolnshire. His father was John Bowstead, 30yrs, Clerk in Holy Orders, his mother, Eliza, 24yrs, nee Kaye; he had 3 siblings, Mary Eliza b.1842, Christopher John b.1845, and Emily Susan b.1848.

Arthur and his brother, Christopher, both became clergymen with the Church of England, Arthur entered Christ's College, Cambridge, in 1875, gaining a BA in 1879 and MA in 1882. He was ordained Deacon in 1880 and Priest in 1881, at Canterbury. He served as Curate in Croydon, Herefordshire and Kent, and was Vicar of several parishes in Lincolnshire and Hampshire.

In 1894, aged 37yrs, Arthur married Mary Wilgress Mills, 32yrs, they had 7 children, Mary Elizabeth b.1895, John b.1895, Margaret b.1897, Thomas b.1899, Frances b.1901, Anna b.1903, and Richard b.1905. In 1924 Arthur and Mary retired to live in Worthing, at 107, Marine Parade, where Mary died, the following year at St. Botolph's Nursing Home, aged 62yrs. Arthur returned to Lincolnshire where he was appointed General Preacher to the diocese in 1926; he lived at The George Hotel, Grantham, where he died on 29th June 1938, aged 80yrs.

Probate was granted to Walter Wilgress Mills, solicitor, and Clive Frederick Bowman, college bursar, effects £2894 13s 7d. Value 2021 - £200K.

The Last Will and Testament for Arthur Bowstead was dated 2nd April 1935 with a Codicil dated 2nd April 1935.

Death of the Rev. A. K. Bowstead - FORMER RECTOR OF INGOLDSBY

A prominent and loved figure in the ministry at Grantham, the Rev. Arthur Kaye Bowstead, died on Wednesday at the George-hotel, where had resided for some time. Deceased, who was a native of Messingham, where his father was Vicar, took his B.A. at Christ's College. Cambridge, in 1878. and his M.A. in 1882.

He was ordained deacon 1880, and priest in 1881. Canterbury. Previous to being appointed Rector of Ingoldsby, near Grantham, from which living he retired about 13 years ago, he was curate at St. Peter's, Croydon, from 1880-1885; at Walford. Herefordshire. 1885-1886; at Eltham. 1886-1892: and Rector of Ludford. Lincolnshire, from 1894-1903. In 1903 he was appointed Rector Hartley-Mauditt. with West Worldham. in the diocese of Winchester.

On his retirement from the ministry, he came to reside in Grantham, of whose King's School he was an old boy. Altogether, the deceased spent 58 years in the ministry.

On Thursday night the coffin was removed to St. John's church, where it rested overnight, and yesterday morning a communion service was held, conducted by the Vicar, the Rev. E. K. Ellis, who was assisted by the Rev. Paul Taggart. Among those present were Mrs. A. G. Ozanne. of Burv St. Edmunds, and Miss A. K. Bowstead. daughters, and Mr. J. A. Cocksworth, who has been deceased's secretary for some time.

The Vicar, making reference to the deceased, said they should give thanks to God for his life and ministry. He was friend and benefactor of that church, and. as regards themselves, thev should all try to follow his good example. Later, the coffin was removed Worthing, to lay in the crypt of Heene church. The interment will take place todav. and the remains will be laid at the side of deceased's wife. The funeral service will be conducted by Canon Wilgress, Stamford.
