Life story

Life story

Emilie was born in Quilon, Madras, India, the daughter of Major-General Nicholas Fenwick Johnson and his wife Bridget Mary. She was baptised in Quilon on 1st December 1831. As an army family, they moved around India and Burma. On 3rd February 1858, Emilie married Rev. George Broadley Howard in Moulmein, Burma. He was an assistant chaplain based in Madras but also travelled around various diocese including Burma. The couple had four children, Charlotte, Amy, Charles and Basil. By 1866, the family were back in England where George had been appointed curate of Baltonsborough in Somerset. The family moved around with George's various appointments mainly around the Kent and London area. George had retired by 1911 and shortly after that, the family moved to Worthing, living at 18 Queen's Road. George died on 29th January 1913 and was buried at Heene. Emilie continued to live in Queen's Road until her death on 27th April 1918. Probate was granted on 30th April by administration to Charles Stephen Garton Howard retired banker. Effects £331 2s 4d. Emilie's brother William, his wife Mary, her sisters Henrietta and Alice are also buried at Heene.
