Life story

Fanny Tuckfield was born on 23rd February 1867 in Stogumber, Somerset, the daughter of William Upham Tuckfield, 39yrs, Publican and Farmer, and Eliza, 35yrs, she was 1 of 8 children.

Fanny was employed in domestic service when she was 14yrs old, in 1881 she was working for a family in Gloucester as a nursemaid.

Fanny, aged 23yrs, married a local man on the 11th September 1890, at the Parish Church in Stogumber, her husband was Thomas Watts, 26yrs, a seaman in the Royal Navy. They had 2 daughters, Edith b.1892 and Daisy Ann b.1894.

In 1900, Thomas transferred to a position as Boatman with the coastguard service which was part of the naval reserve.  He served at various coastguard stations including Selsey and Southampton, accompanied by Fanny and their children. He worked his way up through the ranks and was eventually a Chief Officer when he retired at 55yrs of age in 1920.

In 1921 Thomas and Fanny were living at 87, Rowlands Road, Worthing, Sussex, where Thomas died on 11th November 1926, aged 61yrs. Fanny was a widow for nearly 25yrs, she died, aged 83yrs, on 11th March 1950.
