Life story

Life story

Martha Ellen Harrington was born in Camberwell, March qtr. 1869. She was the daughter of James Harrington, 34yrs, Coachman, and Helen, 30yrs; she had 2 older brothers, Frederick, born 1863, and Richard, born 1866, her sister, Sarah, was born in 1871.

Martha married Joseph Overton, 21yrs, on 19th March 1883, at Christ Church, Clapham, (she gave her age as 19yrs), Joseph's occupation was General Dealer. They had one daughter, Martha, baptised on 8th July 1883 at St. Mary, Lambeth. Joseph and Martha initially lived in Lambeth, but by 1901, they had returned to Clapham and Joseph was now a Florist/Gardener. Ten years later, in 1911, Joseph was working at home, a self-employed Florist, and registered as a cripple on the census.

By 1921 they had moved to Worthing where Martha was widowed when Joseph died, aged 62yrs, on 28th January 1925. Martha appears to have remained in Worthing, her address at the time of her death was, Thornsley, Milton Street; she died on 20th January 1950, aged 82yrs.
