Life story

Florence Nightingale Mitchell was born in Newington, Surrey, she was baptised on 19th February 1859 at St. Paul, Lorrimore Square, Southwark. Her parents were, Thomas Mitchell, 40yrs, Clerk in Holy Orders, and Sarah, 40yrs, nee Bennett; she had 3 siblings, Harriet b.1851, William b.1857, and Eliza b.1862; over the next thirty years, their father's church appointments took the family from Kingston, Surrey, to Buckinghamshire, and then to Oxfordshire.

On 15th November 1890, Florence, 32yrs, married Horace Ernest Detmar, 32yrs, at St. Michael's, Great Tew, Oxfordshire, he was a member of the London Stock Exchange and they lived in Walthamstow, Essex. They had 2 children, Dorothy, born 1893, and Francis, known as Frank, 1896. In 1911, the family was living in Walton on Thames, and at some point, after retiring, Horace and Florence moved to Worthing, Sussex, where they lived at Newlands, Reigate Road.

Florence was widowed in 1928, when Horace died, aged 69yrs. She remained in Worthing, moving to 49, Madeira Avenue, where she died on 28th January 1934, aged 75yrs. Probate was granted to her son, Francis Horace Detmar, commercial traveller, effects £218 7s 5d. Value 2021 - £16K.
