Life story

Life story

John Lagier Lamotte was born in London; he was baptised on 4th November 1815 at Hackney. He was the son of George Francis Lamotte, 31yrs, and Elizabeth, 31yrs, nee Grimshaw. The Lamotte family were of French origin. John had 6 siblings, Eliza b. 1807, Frances b. 1811, George b. 1814, Emma b.1821, Francis b. 1823, and Jane b. 1830.

In 1832 John began a career in law by taking articles of clerkship with Sinckler and Porter, of Chester, for a five-year period. After qualifying as a solicitor, John practiced at Gray's Inn Square in 1941, aged 25yrs. On the 5th of July 1842, John married Mary King at the Parish Church, St. Marylebone: she was a minor, under 21yrs, and consent to the marriage was given by her mother, Hannah King. They had 6 children, Mary Frances b.1844, John Henry b.1847, Emily Adelaide b.1850, Charles Lagier b.1855, Constance Maud b.1857, and Cecil b.1859. In 1851 John and his family were living in Sydenham, Kent, and in 1861 they were in Bray, Berkshire.

John was now a successful lawyer and in 1863 he took a 21year lease on an impressive residence in Brighton, 51, Brunswick Square, it would seem he wasn't as financially secure as it appeared and in 1869 he was declared bankrupt with large debts. As a result, he was obliged to live abroad and took up residence in Cherbourg, France, where he died in 1907, aged 92yrs. John's wife, Mary Lamotte, predeceased him by a few weeks, she was buried at Heene Cemetery on 21st March 1907, and John was buried with her on 30th May 1907.

Miscellaneous information

Pall Mall Gazette 17th June 1869

At the Court of Bankruptcy to-day, upon the application of Mr. Taylor, solicitor to the assignees, an order to prosecute was made against John Lagier Lamotte. of Brighton, and previously of Ferry House, Twickenham, gentleman. The bankrupt's debts were very large. The order was made upon an opinion of Mr. Serjeant Sleigh that the bankrupt was amenable to a prosecution for having failed to surrender, and for having improperly disposed of his property.
