Obituary

HALIFAX DAILY COURIER – Saturday 19th April 1924.

J. W. TUCKETT - Former Halifax Post- Master Dead.

The death took place yesterday, at Montrose, Worthing, of a former well-known and respected Halifax public official, in the person of Mr. John William Tuckett, who was postmaster here from 1905 to 1913. On his leaving Halifax, under the superannuation scheme, Mr. Tuckett went into residence at the South Coast town and his death there will be regretted by the many friends he made during his period of official duty at Halifax. He leaves 1 son and two daughters. Formerly the son occupied an important post in connection with the post office in South Africa, and directly after retirement, Mr. and Mrs. Tuckett visited him there. On the declaration of war, Mr. Tuckett (senior), entered into postal work there, rendering very important service, whilst Mrs. Tuckett returned home. Up to his retirement, Mr. Tuckett had the fine record of 42 years in the post office. A native of Leeds, he entered the Government service there in July 1871. In April 1892, he was appointed postmaster of Gateshead. Five years later, in August 1897, be transferred to Burnley and under his ruling, the postal facilities there were greatly improved. Further promotions came to him, when, on August 16, 1905, be took up the important position of postmaster at Halifax, following Mr. J. W. P. Gregson. During the eight years he was here, Mr. Tuckett always strove for the efficient working of the postal machine, and his handling of the work, whether the times were normal or whether there was a seasonal pressure, was always excellently carried through. Both Mr. and Mrs. Tuckett were active members of the Halifax Parish Church, and at Worthing he became a church warden.
